Life on this little island

I have lived on this island for 15 months but feel like I should have been born here. It took no time to get adjusted and I have loved every minute of living here. Don't get me wrong life here isn't perfect but it is really close to it.
Lately I have been reading a book called "made from scratch" and it's about a young woman who lives in the city but has a strong desire to live a more simple country life. This has been my desire for quite a while and although I would pack up and move to the country tonight if given the chance I realize that as a whole my family is better off in the city, at least for now. So this is where this book sucked me right in. It is all about urban homesteading. What is urban homesteading you ask. Well it is about becoming more self sustainable, relearning those talents and trades that made our grandmothers and grandfathers strong and dependable. For me it is about building a more friendly, neighbourly community. I want to live in a place where I grow my own garden, can what comes from it, make most of my own clothes, bake from scratch, keep myself warm with handmade quilts and know my neighbours enough to borrow a cup of sugar or even better have them feel comfortable enough to borrow one from me.
I want to raise some chickens and bees in my backyard. I want to teach my children that fun comes from using your imagination and I want them to know that hard work is fullfilling and rewarding. I want to raise children that don't need to be entertained by T.V or video games and know that it is fun to get lost in the pages of a good book. I know I'm rambling now but I feel so strongly about this that I could go on about it forever.
I know the best way to acheive this life style is to share ideas and talents with others who have some or all of the same goals that I do. Not only am I eager to share the things that I know but I can't wait to here and learn new things from other people. So please feel free to ask me about my hobbies or latest project and most importantly feel free to leave your thoughts and projects here for others to enjoy. If you try a new recipe, make a new quilt, sew a cool skirt or have a project you know someone else might enjoy please post it or link it here. I will try to post every other day with projects or thoughts from MY urban homestead.

You are so inspiring to me. I would love to read the book when you are done. I think I really need a little push back in that direction as I think that I have fallen off the path. Thanks again for your example.

You go girl! You can always take the girl out the the country, but you cannot take the country out of the girl and Nana is a living example of that!
